Chatfield Announces New Chair of Mathematics

Chatfield College in St. Martin, Ohio and Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood has announced the appointment of Elena Bass as the new full-time Chair of Mathematics.  Ms. Bass will be responsible for the mathematics program at both campuses.

Ms. Bass has a BA in Economics from Brooklyn College, an MBA from Xavier University, and a Master of Community Planning (MCP) from the University of Cincinnati.  She comes to Chatfield with more than 20 years of experience, teaching mathematics at UC Clermont, Xavier University, Northern Kentucky University, and Chatfield College, where she has been an adjunct instructor since 2012.

“We are overjoyed to welcome Elena as our new Chair of Mathematics,” said Peter Hanson, PhD, Chief Academic Officer and Dean.  “Her interest in developing a new student-centered mathematics curriculum will help empower our students to gain the math skills they will need and use now and in the future.”

Ms. Bass’s strategy for teaching mathematics involves engaging students in active learning through problem-solving exercises, brief lectures followed by discussion, small group work, simulations and hands-on experimentation.

“My goal is to make mathematics accessible to our students,” said Bass.  “Students will feel empowered because mathematics becomes not the world of abstraction, but rather part of the world that is around us every day – when we shop, read a newspaper, take out a loan, or even divide a cake into equal parts.”

Ms. Bass lives in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky with her four children – two sons and two daughters.
